Kayaking With a Dog: Boat, Load and Safety

Whether your dog rides along comes down to what the makers actually publish about space and capacity, and what gear fits each of you.

This page summarizes published safety guidance. It is not a substitute for instruction, and conditions on your water may differ. Check the current rules for the state and water you paddle.

The thing to know first: bringing your dog changes what your kayak can carry.

Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two page names a place for a child or dog, while Old Town’s Dirigo Tandem Plus page names a removable child seat. 1 2 Those descriptions do not supply a dog-specific load rating. You still need to compare the boat’s published capacity with the combined weight of people, dog and gear.

Key Takeaways

  • Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two specifications count people, gear and pets within the boat’s usable weight capacity; your dog is part of that load.
  • REI’s undated kayak guide distinguishes a nearby lake in fair weather from coasts with wind, waves, currents and tides when you choose a boat. 3
  • The US Coast Guard’s November 2023 boater’s guide requires a wearable approved life jacket for each person on board; it recommends wearing the jacket while under way. 4
  • Sea Eagle’s undated FAQ allows a dog in its inflatables when the dog’s nails are not sharp; its answer is not a separate dog-seat or safe-load rating.
  • The American Canoe Association’s 2011 Paddler’s Safety Checklist lists a worn life jacket, a spare paddle, a sound signal and other trip gear; the items below are a selection, not the whole checklist.

Ocean Kayak’s copy for the Malibu Two names “plus a small child or pet” and a “molded third seat for a child or dog”.

Sea Eagle’s FAQ answers whether a dog can ride if its nails are not sharp. 5 Old Town’s discontinued Dirigo Tandem Plus page describes a smaller third passenger in a removable child seat, without giving a dog-specific seat rating. 2

Vibe Kayaks’ July 2021 guide advises deck padding or non-skid, a dog life vest, a harness, and not tethering a dog to the boat on the water. 6

What Kayak Makers Actually Say About Dogs on Board

Ocean Kayak’s undated Malibu Two page describes a small child or pet and a molded third seat for a child or dog. Sea Eagle’s undated FAQ says a dog can ride in its inflatables as long as its nails are not sharp.

Old Town’s discontinued Dirigo Tandem Plus listing identifies a removable child seat and a smaller third passenger; it does not assign a dog weight to that seat. Vibe Kayaks’ 2021 guide advises deck padding or non-skid surfaces, a dog life vest and harness, and no tether to the boat while on the water.

These named pages answer different questions. They do not publish a dog-specific seat rating or certify how a particular dog affects handling or safety.

Where the Guidance Stops Short

The limits below describe the named pages examined, not all products or publications from any maker:

  • Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two product page: names the molded third seat for a child or dog and publishes usable and total weight capacities, but gives no separate dog-seat rating.
  • Sea Eagle’s FAQ: answers whether a dog can ride in its inflatables, conditioned on nails that are not sharp; it does not assign the dog a separate seat or load rating.
  • Old Town’s discontinued Dirigo Tandem Plus listing: identifies a removable child seat and a third smaller passenger; it does not specify a dog weight for that seat.
  • Vibe Kayaks’ dog guide: recommends dog gear and footing but does not assign a capacity or fit rating to a particular boat.

How Your Dog Counts Toward Weight Capacity

Your dog’s weight is part of the load in the boat, not an extra allowance.

Ocean Kayak defines the Malibu Two’s usable weight capacity as what remains for people, gear and pets after accounting for the assembled boat. Its total weight capacity includes the assembled boat as well. Old Town uses the same people, gear and pets distinction in its Dirigo Tandem Plus specification.

In plain terms, your dog takes up part of the weight budget you have for the trip.

Include the dog when you compare everyone and everything aboard with the boat’s published usable capacity.

Seat Ratings and Tandem Kayak Capacity

Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two page describes a third molded seat for a child or dog, but gives no separate weight rating for it. Old Town’s Dirigo Tandem Plus listing describes a removable child seat and a smaller third passenger, without a dog-specific rating. Neither description establishes a safe dog load for that position.

A tandem kayak has a shared boat capacity. Sea Eagle’s undated SE370 page rates it at three persons or 650 pounds and says the available space is best suited to two persons. 7 That description does not promise that a particular dog and two people will fit.

Your dog’s weight reduces the remaining capacity for people and gear in these boats.

Picking the Right Kayak for Your Dog and Your Water

REI’s undated guide suggests any sit-on-top or recreational sit-in for a nearby local lake in fair weather, while warning that whitecaps can overmatch a purely recreational boat. For a river without technical rapids, it discusses stable, quick-turning recreational and day-touring boats. 3

For coasts, REI calls out wind, waves, currents and tides and favors a sit-in touring kayak with a rudder, fin or skeg; it also describes when a sit-on-top may suit warm conditions. This is guidance about water and boat type, not a finding that a boat suits your particular dog. 3

REI warns that whitecaps can overmatch a purely recreational boat. 3

Why Sit-On-Top Kayaks and Tandems May Offer Space for Dogs

Ocean Kayak names the Malibu Two’s molded third seat for a child or dog. Old Town’s Dirigo Tandem Plus listing names a removable child seat without a dog rating. Sea Eagle’s SE370 page gives a combined capacity and says two people fit its space most easily. REI describes sit-on-tops as easy to get on and off and suitable for casual use in appropriate water. 3

These descriptions help you compare space and access. Your dog’s size, the load aboard and the conditions still matter; none of these pages certifies a universal dog-friendly boat.

Dog Life Jacket Sizing by Brand

The federal life-jacket carriage and child-wear rules apply to people aboard. A dog vest is a separate maker product: NRS expressly says its CFD dog vest is not a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Ruffwear, Astral and NRS publish their own dog sizing charts.

BrandHow it sizesSmallest sizeLargest size
Ruffwear Float CoatGirth chartXXS: 13 to 17 inchesXL: 36 to 42 inches
Astral BirdDogWeight and girthXS: 5 to 15 pounds at 13 to 19 inchesXL: 75 pounds and over at 30 to 39 inches
NRS CFDChest, weight, and flotationXS: up to 12 pounds, 14 to 21 inch chest, 2.7 pounds of flotationXL: 80 pounds and over, 35 to 41 inch chest, 7.9 pounds of flotation

Sources: the makers’ undated Float Coat, BirdDog and CFD product sizing charts. 8 9 10 The rows show their listed end sizes, not a common sizing standard. Ruffwear also lists XS at 17 to 22 inches, S at 22 to 27, M at 27 to 32 and L at 32 to 36. Astral lists S at 15 to 25 pounds and 17 to 25 inches, M at 25 to 45 pounds and 21 to 31 inches, and L at 45 to 75 pounds and 26 to 35 inches.

Why Girth Matters

Outward Hound’s May 2022 measuring guide calls chest girth its most important measurement, then tells you to weigh the dog and consult its chart. 11

Ruffwear instructs you to measure around the widest part of the rib cage and supplies separate back and neck dimensions.

Use the chart for the particular vest you choose. The brands’ size bands differ, so a label such as “medium” alone does not establish fit.

Required Safety Gear for Kayaking With Dogs

The US Coast Guard’s November 2023 boater’s guide separates a person’s required life jacket from its advice to wear one. 4

Recreational vessels must carry one approved, serviceable, appropriately sized wearable life jacket per person, readily accessible. Canoes and kayaks are exempt from the additional throwable-device requirement for boats 16 feet and longer. 4

The Coast Guard’s Navigation Rules FAQ 13 classifies kayaks and canoes as vessels under oars. Under Rule 25, a vessel under oars may show the sailing-vessel lights. If it does not, Inland Rule 25 allows an all-round white light or requires a white torch or lantern ready to show in time to prevent collision; the International rule has the ready white-light option but not the Inland all-round alternative. The light rules apply from sunset to sunrise; prescribed lights, if carried, must also be shown in daytime restricted visibility. Rule 33 requires a vessel under 39.4 feet (12 meters) without the prescribed sound appliance to have another means of making an efficient signal. Check which rules govern your water. 12 13

Under the federal child rule described in the 2023 Coast Guard guide, children under 13 must wear an appropriate approved life jacket while the vessel is under way, except when below deck or in an enclosed cabin. On waters under a state’s jurisdiction, a differing state child-wear requirement applies. 4

Selected Paddling Kit Items

The American Canoe Association’s 2011 Paddler’s Safety Checklist goes beyond the federal carriage rule. Among its listed items are:

  • A life jacket worn by the paddler and a whistle or other sound signal
  • Clothing appropriate to the conditions, including immersion clothing for cold water
  • A spare paddle, bilge pump or bailer, and rescue gear such as a paddle float
  • A chart or map and compass, first-aid kit, water and snacks, spare clothing in a dry bag, and a VHF radio and GPS locator

This is a selection from the ACA’s longer checklist, not a complete kit or a federal equipment rule. 14

Why Fit Beats Any Maker Claim

A boat’s child-seat or pet description does not change a legal life-jacket rule for people. Old Town’s Dirigo listing calls its extra seat a child seat; it does not establish a life-jacket exception. The Coast Guard’s 2023 guide describes the human carriage and child-wear conditions above. 4

A maker’s product description does not replace the applicable child-wear rule.

A dog vest is separate from the approved wearable jacket required for a person. Ruffwear, Astral and NRS give maker-specific dog size bands; NRS states that its CFD is not Coast Guard approved. Vibe Kayaks’ 2021 guide advises a dog life vest and harness and advises against tethering a dog to the boat on the water.

Check the chosen vest maker’s fit chart; the brands’ size names and measurements differ.

Outward Hound’s 2022 guidance puts chest girth first and then asks you to check weight against its chart. 11 A size name alone does not establish fit across brands.

The Bottom Line on Kayaking With Dogs

The named makers describe dog access, seating and shared boat capacity in different ways.

Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two page describes a child-or-dog position and counts pets within usable capacity. Old Town’s Dirigo Tandem Plus page also includes pets in its definition of usable capacity, while describing its extra seat as a child seat.

Sea Eagle’s FAQ addresses dog nails, while its SE370 page gives a shared load and describes space for two people. Your dog still takes up space and weight that reduces what else you can carry.

Ocean Kayak’s Malibu Two page names a child or dog for its third position; it supplies no separate dog-seat rating. Old Town’s Dirigo Tandem Plus page does not give its child seat a dog-specific load rating. Neither maker description establishes a safe load for your particular dog.

Sea Eagle rates the SE370 at three persons or 650 pounds while saying that the space is best suited to two persons. Adding your dog uses some of that shared room and load allowance.

Vibe Kayaks’ 2021 guide advises deck padding or non-skid, a dog life vest, a harness, and not tethering your dog to the boat on the water. Those recommendations do not add to a boat’s published usable capacity.

Compare the boat’s usable capacity, the conditions in REI’s water-type guidance, each person’s Coast Guard life-jacket requirements, and the dog vest maker’s own fit chart.

Use the life-jacket rules guide, required and recommended gear guide and weather and wind guide for the wider trip checks.
